We’ll start with Alabama, which for the entire college football season, was looking like it wouldn’t make it to the four-team playoff that will ultimately determine this year’s national champion. Alabama had played well all season, but it once again looked like Georgia would take the SEC championship. Then, earlier this month, Alabama stunned Georgia with a 27-24 victory. The college football playoff selection committee was then left with a dilemma: go with the undefeated Florida State or opt for Alabama, the SEC champion. It ultimately chose the latter, sparking controversy across college football.
Truth be told, Alabama is walking into this game against Michigan an underdog. But we’ve seen the team’s astounding resilience all year. And if any team can topple the top football program in the country, it’s Alabama.
Michigan, meanwhile, walks into the Rose Bowl with its own measure of controversy after its coach Jim Harbaugh was suspended for three games following a Big Ten investigation that claimed Michigan conducted an “impermissible, in-person scouting operation over multiple years.” Michigan initially denied the allegations, but Harbaugh ultimately accepted the sanction and a Michigan lawsuit was pulled.
Despite that, Michigan is the top-ranked team in the nation for a reason: it’s a very good team. So, the question remains: Can Michigan live up to its top ranking or will Alabama and coach Nick Saban, who has been to a countless number of big bowl games, once again shock the world?

Going into conference championship weekend, many experts believed Georgia would extend their 29-game win streak and defeat Alabama to win the SEC Championship. Yet, Nick Saban’s team had other plans as the Crimson Tide upset the Bulldogs by a score of 27-24 to advance to the College Football Playoff. On the other side of the bracket stands the Michigan Wolverines, who throttled the Iowa Hawkeyes 26-0 in the Big Ten Championship to secure the top seed in the playoff.
Two of college football’s most storied programs face off when No. 1 seed Michigan and No. 4 seed Alabama meet in the Rose Bowl, a College Football Playoff semifinal game. The winner will advance to the national title game Jan. 8 in Houston against either Texas or Washington, who play each other in the Sugar Bowl.
Nick Saban is seeking his seventh national title with the Crimson Tide and eighth overall. Alabama is led by quarterback Jalen Milroe and linebacker Dallas Turner. Led by Jim Harbaugh and quarterback JJ McCarthy, unbeaten Michigan is seeking its first title since 1997 and third overall.
The Big Ten champion Wolverines are 13-0 and have outscored opponents by an average of 27 points per game. Alabama (12-1) has won 11 straight games since a loss to Texas, including a Southeastern Conference championship game victory over Georgia, winner of the past two national titles.
The two winningest programs in college football history will meet in the sport’s most iconic venue on the first day of 2024. Oh, and a trip to the national championship is on the line. Michigan will face Alabama in the Rose Bowl in a playoff semifinal game.
Michigan is 13-0 and the No. 1 seed in the four-team playoff. The Wolverines steamrolled their competition early in the season before earning hard-fought victories over Penn State, Maryland, and Ohio State. The win over the Buckeyes pushed the Wolverines to the Big Ten championship for the third straight year, and they delivered once again, shutting out Iowa 26-0.
This is as complete a team as you’ll find. Offensively, Michigan is balanced with J.J. McCarthy completing 74 percent of his passes (second in the country) and Blake Corum leading the country with 24 rushing touchdowns. Michigan’s defense is first in points allowed, having yielded just 9.5 per game.
Alabama (12-1) is ascending, and is coming off a win over two-time defending national champion Georgia in the SEC championship. The Crimson Tide looked shaky in September but partly thanks to the improved play of quarterback Jalen Milroe have looked dangerous lately.
Michigan's current group of players carries more experience from its back-to-back semifinal losses, and a strong case could be made that this year's version of the Wolverines is best equipped to make a run at the national championship.
Michigan should score on the Alabama defense, and it is just a matter of if it does it primarily on the ground behind Blake Corum, or if J.J. McCarthy chips in with a few big throws.
McCarthy's experience from last year's playoff semifinal and from winning tight Big Ten games in the last two seasons could end up as the X-factor for Michigan in a battle against Milroe, who has been more inconsistent at points of the season.
The Wolverines are undefeated this season. They've gone 13-0, earning the top spot in the Big Ten conference and the No. 1 ranking in college football. But their Rose Bowl opponent is the best team they'll see this season.
Both teams are led by stellar quarterbacks. Alabama's Jalen Milroe has thrown for more than 2,700 yards with 23 touchdowns and six interceptions. Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy has thrown for nearly the same number of yards with 19 touchdowns and four interceptions.
Michigan is looking for redemption after losing in the CFP semifinals the last two seasons. The team has had an impressive season, going 13-0 thanks in part to the efforts of running back Blake Corum and quarterback J.J. McCarthy on offense. The Wolverines’ calling card, however, is their No. 2 ranked defense, which held opponents to the fewest points in college football.
Alabama is a more-than-worthy opponent, having racked off 11 straight wins following an early season loss to Texas. The streak included a thrilling victory over then-No. 1 Georgia, ending the Bulldogs’ 29-game winning streak. The Crimson Tide, of course, are led by legendary head coach Nick Saban, who has an incredible 6-1 record in CFB semifinal games.
Michigan will have to find a way to stifle Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe, who has electrified opposing defenses since being benched in Week 3 against South Florida. He has been responsible for 23 passing touchdowns and has committed only six interceptions, guiding the Crimson Tide to 11 consecutive victories after a Week 2 loss to No. 3 Texas.
There also is the chess match between Michigan's Jim Harbaugh and Alabama coach Nick Saban. They have met just once as coaches of their current teams: a 2020 Citrus Bowl matchup that saw Saban's Crimson Tide get the best of Harbaugh and the Wolverines in a 35-16 win.
Quarterback Jalen Milroe will continue to be the Crimson Tide's deciding factor offensively: He has totaled 23 passing touchdowns to six interceptions while rushing for 12 more. He has kept the turnovers to a minimum since his Week 3 benching against South Florida, but has shown the propensity to take a shot for the big play when necessary.
Alabama's Dallas Turner and the Crimson Tide's defensive front seven must win the battle in the trenches by suffocating Michigan running back Blake Corum, the engine of the Wolverines' offense. Corum led all FBS running backs with 24 touchdowns and had his third 1,000-yard season this year.
The Alabama Crimson Tide caused a stir at the Rose Bowl when they revealed they’ve restricted their players’ game film viewing on iPads heading into the College Football Playoff semifinal against Michigan because of concerns about hacking.
The Wolverines also have stopped watching game film on iPads, players and coaches said Friday. Both teams are watching film only in groups or on protected devices as they prepare for their high-stakes meeting in Pasadena.
